The Care Gateway team use their skills to support COVID-19 test centres in Greater Manchester

On Wednesday 3 February, a COVID-19 testing site for key workers opened at Manchester Town Hall and The Care Gateway team were an important part of making this happen.

The site at the Town Hall offers COVID-19 tests to asymptomatic key workers in Greater Manchester who can't work from home - such as teachers, police and fire service staff.

The Care Gateway set up the booking system for the site and the team are now taking bookings and arranging appointments for key workers to have free lateral flow tests. A rapid turnaround test that is processed on site without the need to send samples to a laboratory for results, helping keep key workers in work safely and others safe from COVID-19 in Greater Manchester.

Karen Williams, The Care Gateway Service Lead, said: “We’re a small part of huge programme of work to help keep key workers working safely and ultimately in the fight against this awful virus, but I’m really proud of the team and the important work they are doing. When I heard a reporter on the local news talking about the opening of the testing site at the Town Hall and refer to the booking system that’s in place, I thought that’s us – that’s my team! It made me feel really proud.”

The Care Gateway have been supporting the COVID-19 testing programme in Greater Manchester since December last year when they were first contacted by the Manchester Test and Trace team and asked if they could help by providing a suitable booking system for lateral flow test centres. They set up the booking system and on their first day supporting the centres the team received over 250 calls. More recently the team were contacted to support the lateral flow test site at Manchester Town Hall.
